Study: Patients recovering from substance use disorder engage in intense and immersive daydreaming

The International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction just published online a new study in which we showed that compared to controls, individuals recovering from substance use disorder engage in intense and immersive daydreaming that can reach pathological levels (MD). We argued that since the childhood adversities commonly characterise the histories of substance use disorder patients, this group is at an increased risk, not only of trauma-related dissociative disorders but also of maladaptive daydreaming, a less known, distressful form of a dissociative absorption in fantasy.
